“You cannot be really first-rate at your work if your work is all you are.”

Brain Pickings is outstanding… and has been hitting it out of the park lately.

Yesterday: A Short Guide to a Happy Life: Anna Quindlen on Work, Joy, and How to Live Rather Than Exist

“You cannot be really first-rate at your work if your work is all you are.”

Today: Happy Birthday, Jack Kerouac: The Beat Icon on Kindness, the Self Illusion, and the “Golden Eternity”

“Practice kindness all day to everybody and you will realize you’re already in heaven now.”

Brain Pickings is one of the websites I visit the most.

  1. I read Anna Quindlin’s most-excellent commencement speech/book. “Life is made up of moments, small pieces of glittering mica in a long stretch of gray cement. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won’t happen. We have to teach ourselves how to make room for them, to love them, and to live, really live.”

And sometimes that’s a time of quiet reflection by a stream; other times it is the joy of being present, in the moment, enjoying the beauty of nature, or the beauty of family and friends. Lovely, lovely
