Tokyo Story

Tokyo Story

Yasujiro Ozu

You know how when watching any and every American movie you are aware, the entire time, that you are watching a movie? Movies are gratuitous because they are gratuitous; that is, they are created with a single purpose – to make money – so they are going to pander. That is their foundation and their goal; their beginning and their end. Pander, pander, pander. Lowest common demoninator. No respect for the audience.

Not so here. There is not one false moment. You may need to be over 25 to fully appreciate it, I don’t know, but this is what I am talking about when I talk about films being human. If you watch this film through, it will change your idea of what makes a great film.
