#5 of 21: Writing: Chiasmus, baby.

What  is Chiasmus?
If you can complete the following statements, you know what chiasmus is:

  • “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight,…”
  • “Ask not what your country can do for you,…”

OK, hot shot. Try these:

  • “In peace sons bury their fathers,…”
  • “We must never fear to negotiate,…”
  • “My job is not to represent Washington to you,…”

What is Chiasmus?
It is one of the politician’s secret weapons! Look at the quotes above. Two by JFK, one by Obama, and one by King Croesus (575-546 B.C.) of Lydia.

Their other weapon? See post #3 in this series: Parallel Sentence Structure.

Want to get on the school board? Oust the current mayor of your town? Have plans for world domination? What do sway people with your words (I’m looking at you TV evangelists)? Easy. Chiasmus and Parallel Structure.
